About Newcastle
Newcastle can be found at the heart of the Hunter River in New South Wales, just over a two-hour drive north from Sydney. A harbour town, its world-class beaches and coastal walks bring joy to locals and attract visitors from the world over. The Newcastle metropolitan area is the second most populated area in the state, with the city itself thought to have a population of more than 322,000 at the 2016 census.
The area on which the city of Newcastle is built and the lower Hunter Region more generally, were traditionally occupied by the Awabakal and Worimi indigenous Australian people, who referred to the area as Malubimba.
In the late 1790s, Lieutenant John Shortland became the first European settler to explore the area, while in search of some escaped convicts and a stolen vessel. He was impressed by the deep water port, abundance of coal, and the quality of the river, which he named after New South Wales Governor John Hunter. Coal mining in the area quickly commenced, providing the New South Wales colony’s first export. Even today, Newcastle is the largest coal exporting harbour in the world, having exported almost 160 million tonnes in 2017.
Having existed as a penal colony since establishment, military rule eventually ended in Newcastle in the early 1820s and over time the region’s many other natural resources and hospitable farming conditions became attractive money making propositions for free settlers who began to flock to the area.

If a roller is not present, ensure that the pool cover material remains in complete shade, when it is removed from the pool. As the material is an excellent conductor of heat, it is possible for the material to possibly melt under direct sunlight without the cooling of the water. Also over exposure to heat, has a negative effect on the composition of the make-up of the material. This can seriously effect how the pool cover reacts to chlorine degradation.
Yes! A pool cover will deter ducks, by preventing them access to the water. The idea is to break the behavioural habit of the ducks. Your swimming pool is mostly clear, and therefore the duck can see the bottom and the contents of the water – thus allowing the duck to ascertain whether or not there are predators in the water. Generally most swimming pools are fenced, the fence acts as a barrier to predators also. On top of this some pools, have some form of vegetation handy, such as grass, plants etc and provide a small amount of food. Your pool is an ideal safe place for a swim, a quick bite to eat and inevitably go to the toilet.
All pool covers will deter ducks from swimming in the pool, but the degree of their effectiveness largely depends on which type of pool cover you choose. How a pool cover deters the ducks is simply by denying them access to the thing that the duck seeks – the water. By covering the water up, they can no longer swim/ bathe in your pool. Placing a cover will not instantly stop the ducks from coming, over time, they will understand that they cannot access your pool – and in turn go somewhere else. The common misconception is to try and scare the ducks away from the pool with floating objects or hanging items above the water line.
